Pray for us.

— Hebrews 13:18

Have you ever promised to pray for a friend who was going through a hard time and then completely forgot? Then the next time you saw them you felt terrible because you had fully intended to pray, but just got busy and forgot? Or what about the prayer requests you see on social media or hear in church? It's so easy to have good intentions and so easy to forget.

Prayer can feel hard. It is something I still struggle with. Even my friends who are seasoned prayer warriors and intercessors have times when they struggle. Recently, I was confiding in a strong woman of God who prays some of the most powerful prayers I have ever heard. I told her that I just felt weary. Life was heavy. It felt like I had been asking God the same things repeatedly and was still waiting on an answer. I honestly felt tired of asking, tired of the repetition of my requests. She told me that she has felt that way before, which honestly surprised me. In those moments, she just sits with God while listening to praise music. So that's what I did. I just sat with God in praise, with no words and no requests. This lasted for a little while until my soul was refreshed enough to go back to my regular prayer rhythms.

Having people around to encourage you is vital to your Christian walk. Like this friend of mine, they lift you up when you don't have the strength to go on. They are the prayer warriors who let you know they are praying for you when you are going through a hard day or a hard season. Knowing that you have people who lift you up before God in prayer faithfully is life altering.

When I was diagnosed with cancer in 2022, one of the first people I reached out to was my dear friend, Karen. We were already prayer buddies. We both knew the struggle of autoimmune disease and would regularly lift each other up in prayer. The level of care and dedication that she and her kind husband gave me through prayer was nothing I had ever experienced before. She was so concerned when I had tests or chemo. She would always check in to see how they had gone. Whenever I had prayer requests, she would grab her husband, and they would pray right then and there. Sadly, she passed away last year, and honestly, it has been one of the hardest loses I have gone through. I still tear up when I think of her. I miss her all the time. This is the power of a godly, praying woman. This is the impact prayer can make. I credit her prayers as a big part of being 4 years cancer free. Thankfully God has put other godly women in my life who pray for me now, and it is such an encouragement to me.

Understanding the importance of others praying for me has made me more committed to praying for others. I don't have a prayer closet. I used to have a prayer wall. Now that my office is our guest room, to protect the privacy of these prayer requests, I have moved them into a binder. It makes it easier to transport, too. I divide my prayer requests into different categories based on the names of God in the Bible. Romans 10:13 says, “For “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” God has many names in the Bible. I’ve chosen six to guide my daily prayer life.

The Scripture I held on to during my cancer journey.

Jehovah Sabaoth - BIG problems where you need the might and power of God to prevail. I include things like natural disasters, government leadership, and things I’m overwhelmed by.

Jehovah Shalom - People who need peace over trials and anxieties, or those who have lost a loved one and need comfort.

Jehovah Rohi - Those who need the special care and love of Jesus. I pray for those who need guidance. For children who need God's special care. For people who need to feel God's love.

Jehovah Mekoddishkem - People who need God to work in their lives to make them more like Him (don’t we all?). People who need God to draw them to a relationship with Himself.

Jehovah Rapha - Those who need God’s healing - spiritual, mental, emotional, or physical.

Jehovah Jireh - People and situations that need God to provide for their needs.

This helps guide me during my prayers. I use the names of God in my daily prayer practice. I claim a promise that goes along with the name of God. I ask Him in that name to hear me and answer my prayer in the name of Jesus. I have created special prayer pages that can be used for this purpose. You can post them on your wall. You can put them in a binder and put sticky notes on them, or you can write on them directly. I like to use sticky notes, and then when a prayer is answered, I write it down in a more permanent place. You can use a journal, or you can print more of these pages to keep track of how God has moved in your life and the lives of those you pray for.

A few more resources I use in my prayer life:

  • Guided books on prayer for when you just don't know what to pray.

  • The Lectio 365 app for meditation morning, noon and night.

  • The Pause app for when I need a few minutes of calm and to center myself in God’s presence.

Reflect

• Have you had a faithful friend who you know you can count on for keeping you lifted up in prayer before God?

• How can you implement some of these ideas into your own daily prayer life?

Prayer: Heavenly Father, Jehovah,

Thank You for being the anchor of our lives and for inviting us to come to You, just as we are. When life feels heavy and we grow weary from asking for the same answers over and over again, teach us to simply rest in Your presence. Help us to sit quietly with You, letting praise refresh our souls when we have no words left to pray.

Thank You for the gift of Christian fellowship and the prayer warriors You place in our lives to lift us up when we lack the strength to stand. Help us to honor their faithfulness by becoming faithful intercessors for others. Give us dedicated hearts to remember those who are hurting, sick, anxious, or facing trials.

Give us courage to walk through every season knowing You will never leave or forsake us. Fill us with joy and anticipation as we trust in Your promises and look toward Your moving hand in our lives.

In Jesus' name, Amen.
