The Voice That Won't Stop Calling

"Today, if you will hear His voice, do not harden your hearts."  — Hebrews 3:15

Woman praying a listening for God's voice

Peter Marshall was 17, walking home across a dark Scottish heath, when he heard a voice call his name. He stopped. Then kept walking. The voice called again — urgent this time. He stopped. Shifted his weight. And found himself standing at the edge of a quarry he hadn't known was there. One more step would have been his last.

He said afterward that he resolved to always obey that voice.

Hebrews 3 quotes Psalm 95, a song the Israelites would have known by heart: Today, if you hear His voice, do not harden your hearts. The warning is about a generation that saw miracle after miracle in the wilderness — water from rocks, bread from heaven, pillars of fire — and still refused to trust God when things got hard. They hardened. They drifted. They missed what was waiting for them.

The voice of God is still speaking. In Scripture. In the quiet after the noise dies down. In the nudge that says call that person, or go back, or I'm here.

The question Hebrews asks is not whether God is speaking. It's whether we're hardened against His voice — through busyness, through disappointment, through the slow drift of not responding the last ten times He called.

Softness is a daily choice. So is hardness. Today is always the right day to lean back in.

Listen for God's voice.

Reflect

• Have you ever felt like God was prompting you toward something and you talked yourself out of it? What happened?

• Is there an area of your life where you sense your heart has grown a little harder toward God? What would softening look like?

Prayer: Lord, I don't want to miss Your voice because I've stopped listening. Soften my heart today. Give me ears to hear and the courage to respond — even when I don't fully understand. Amen.
